How much can you make selling printables on Etsy? A calm look
What printables really earn on Etsy: fees on a $5 sale, Etsy’s own seller data, honest monthly scenarios, and the rules and taxes that shape your income.
No one publishes a reliable “typical” income for Etsy printables sellers. Etsy’s own figures work out to a rough average of about $1,870 in gross sales per seller in 2025, across every category, and a few big shops pull that average up. What you can count on is the per-sale math: a $5 printable leaves you about $4.07 after Etsy’s standard fees. Your income comes down to how many steady sales you can build.
Upfront work: a rough estimate of 20 to 40 hours to design, test and list your first 10 to 20 products, plus shop setup and identity checks.
Ongoing work: likely a few hours a week for new listings, promotion and buyer messages, with more in the months before the holidays.
What the numbers actually say
No public source tracks earnings for printables sellers. The closest thing to hard data is Etsy’s own annual filing.
Etsy’s FY2025 Form 10-K reports about $10.46 billion in marketplace sales for 2025, down 4% from 2024. That was shared among 5.6 million active sellers. Divide one by the other and you get roughly $1,870 in gross sales per seller for the year.
Hold that number loosely. It’s gross, before fees and costs. It covers every category, including physical goods. The filing also says Etsy’s top sellers “drive the majority” of sales, so the average sits above what most shops see. And Etsy counts anyone with a charge or a sale in the last 12 months as an “active seller”, which means shops that paid listing fees and sold nothing are counted too.
The same filing quotes Etsy’s 2024 Seller Census:
- 89% of sellers are businesses of one
- 29% say their creative business is their only job
- 38% use the income to cover household expenses
The filing doesn’t say whether those figures cover US sellers only. Together they describe mostly one-person shops, nearly all run from home, with a minority earning their full living this way.
What printables usually sell for
Etsy’s top-selling printable wall art pages are full of mega-bundles, botanical and cottagecore sets, and Christian verse sets, many priced between $1 and $6. If you want a closer look at those listings, see what the best selling printable wall art on Etsy has in common.
Low prices matter because some of Etsy’s fees are fixed amounts. They don’t shrink when your price does.
Where each sale goes
These are the main US fees in Etsy’s fees and payments policy:
| Fee | Cost | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Listing fee | $0.20 | When you list, and again on each sale of a multi-quantity digital listing. Listings auto-renew every four months |
| Transaction fee | 6.5% | On the displayed price (not on sales tax) |
| Payment processing | 3% + $0.25 | Per order, on the full amount including tax |
| Offsite Ads | 15% (12% once you reach $10,000 in a 365-day period) | Only when an ad click leads to a sale within 30 days. Capped at $100 per order |
| Currency conversion | 2.5% | Only if you list in a currency other than your payment account’s |
| Shop setup fee | One time, amount varies by location | When you finish setting up your shop |
With no sales tax and no Offsite Ads, the numbers come out like this:
- A $2 print costs about $0.64 in fees and leaves you $1.36, so close to a third is gone.
- A $5 print costs about $0.93 in fees and leaves you $4.07.
- A $12 set costs about $1.59 in fees and leaves you $10.41.
If an Offsite Ad brings in that $5 sale at 15%, another $0.75 comes off and you keep about $3.32. You can opt out of Offsite Ads only if your shop has never reached $10,000 in sales in any 365-day period. After that, they’re required.
A few honest monthly scenarios
These figures are assumptions, not predictions. Say your average sale is $5 with no tax and no Offsite Ads, so you keep $4.07 each time.
- 10 sales a month: about $41
- 50 sales a month: about $204
- 200 sales a month: about $814
Then come the quieter costs. Unsold listings renew at $0.20 every four months, so a 100-listing shop pays $20 per cycle just to stay listed. Paid promotion adds up faster. Etsy Ads start at a $1 daily minimum, and Etsy suggests at least $3 to $5 a day for a useful test. At $3 a day you’d spend around $90 a month, which is more than the 10-sales shop takes home.
So each sale keeps a healthy share once your price is above a few dollars. Whether the shop makes money overall depends on your ad spend, how many listings you keep, and what your hours are worth to you.
Is there still room?
Buyers are there. Etsy reported about 87 million active buyers over the 12 months to mid-2026. Its trend team says searches for “wall art decor” rose 110% and searches for “gallery prints” rose 80% in the three months to February 10, 2026, compared with a year earlier.
Competition is the other half. Millions of shops share those buyers, and sales lean toward the biggest ones. Ask yourself whether you can make something a buyer would choose over a $2 mega-bundle.
Product ideas that sell
These themes come up again and again on Etsy’s top-selling wall art pages:
- Coordinated gallery wall sets built around Etsy’s 2026 Color of the Year (Patina Blue) and Texture of the Year (Washed Linen), for people decorating a whole wall at once
- Botanical print sets for people refreshing a living room or home office
- Soft, matching nursery sets for expecting parents and baby shower gift-givers
- Kitchen quote prints for new homeowners and housewarming gifts
- Bible verse sets for home decor and church or ministry gifts
Pricing tiers
Three price levels give buyers a choice without overwhelming them. The prices below show the math. They aren’t market rates:
- Good: a single print at $5, which nets about $4.07
- Better: a matching set of three at $12, which nets about $10.41
- Bundle: a full room set at $20, which nets about $17.65
The fixed $0.45 per order (the $0.20 listing fee plus the $0.25 processing fee) takes a smaller share as the price goes up. That’s a quiet reason to offer bundles.
The rules that protect your income
Etsy’s Creativity Standards, last updated June 10, 2025, require you to make and/or design your digital items yourself. Reselling PLR packs, “commercial use” bundles or scans of someone else’s work doesn’t count, even if you bought a license. Listings that break these standards can be removed. Under Etsy’s intellectual property policy, repeat infringers can lose all their shops.
AI art is allowed if it comes from your own prompts, but you must disclose the AI use in the listing description. The US Copyright Office’s 2025 report on AI also says purely AI-generated material isn’t protected, and prompts alone aren’t enough. That makes AI-only prints hard to defend against copycats. Your own drawing, editing, selection and arrangement carry more weight. For more on that workflow, see can you make money with ChatGPT and Canva.
Fonts and stock images need the same care. Read each license and make sure it allows commercial use in products you sell, not just personal projects.
One myth to set aside: Etsy’s August 2026 Prohibited Items update banned natural animal fur. It did not ban templates or printables.
Getting paid, refunds and taxes
You need to be 18 or older. Teens can sell only through a parent’s supervised account. You’ll also verify your ID with a photo and a selfie, and connect a US bank account through Plaid. New sellers usually wait about 14 days before funds become available, and Etsy may hold part of the balance as a reserve. Deposits start out weekly, on Mondays.
Digital files can’t be returned. Etsy’s Purchase Protection can still side with a buyer whose file never arrived or didn’t match the listing, so clear, accurate descriptions protect your income.
For US buyers, Etsy collects and pays the sales tax on digital orders for you. Payment platforms only have to send a Form 1099-K once you pass $20,000 and 200 transactions. Some states set lower thresholds, and your income is taxable whether or not you get a form. Self-employment tax applies once your net earnings reach $400. This is general information, not tax advice, so ask a tax professional about your own situation.
The not-so-passive part
You make a printable once, but the shop around it keeps needing attention. New shops have to wait 15 days before they can run Etsy Ads. After that you’ll be adjusting titles, photos and seasonal listings, and helping buyers who can’t open a ZIP file. If you’re weighing how hands-off this really is, passive income streams, explained for digital makers gives the wider picture.
Watch for phishing too. Real Etsy messages appear under “From Etsy” with a badge, and Etsy never asks for your password through Messages. Be wary of buyers who push you to switch to email, send QR codes, or offer to overpay.
Ship a tiny version
This week, make one print or one set of three in a theme you genuinely like. Export it at 300 DPI in a few standard sizes. Etsy allows up to five files per listing, 20MB each.
Write a plain description that covers what’s included, the sizes, the fact that it’s a digital download, and an AI disclosure if you used AI. Price it at $5 or more so the fixed fees don’t eat your margin.
List it for $0.20, skip paid ads for now, and check its views and favorites at the end of the month. That tells you whether to make a matching set next or try a new theme.
