In this guide
Yes, you can make money with ChatGPT and Canva. You do it by using them to build original digital products, such as templates, printables and short ebooks, and selling those on Etsy, Gumroad or Amazon KDP. ChatGPT drafts the words and Canva handles the layout. You supply the niche knowledge and editing that buyers actually pay for, and you should expect modest, uneven side income, because nobody has published evidence for the big monthly figures in viral posts.
Effort now, effort later
| What it involves | Our honest estimate | |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront work | Choosing a niche, drafting with ChatGPT, designing in Canva, testing files, writing listings, learning the license rules | A focused weekend for a first small product. Several weeks for an ebook, a mini-course or a large template set. |
| Ongoing work | Promotion, answering buyer questions, fixing files, refreshing seasonal designs, keeping AI disclosures accurate | A few hours most weeks, and more around launches and busy seasons |
Who does what: ChatGPT, Canva and you
Both tools are fast at packaging. Neither is good at knowing what a stranger needs. Here’s where each one helps.
| Job | ChatGPT | Canva | You |
|---|---|---|---|
| Finding a niche | Brainstorms buyer types and their problems | Little help | Choose a group you understand |
| Content | Outlines, first drafts, checklist ideas | Little help | Fact-check, rewrite in your voice, add real experience |
| Design | Can generate images | Layout, type, color, export, mockups | Make the choices that make it yours |
| Selling | Listing titles, descriptions, FAQ replies | Preview images | Price, promote, look after customers |
The two tools are now connected. According to Canva, the Canva app inside ChatGPT can create and edit designs and rewrite or translate text. It works on the Free, Plus and Pro plans outside the EU. Canva’s Magic Layers feature can also turn an image you made in ChatGPT into an editable, layered Canva design once you connect Canva or type “@Canva”.
Before you open either tool, it’s worth asking yourself one question. What do you know that someone would happily pay to skip learning? That’s your product. The software just helps you wrap it up.
What it costs to start
| Tool | Plan | US price |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Free | $0 (OpenAI began testing ads for US users in February 2026) |
| ChatGPT | Go | $8/month (also shows ads) |
| ChatGPT | Plus | $20/month, no ads |
| Canva | Free | $0 |
| Canva | Pro | From US$144/year for one person, before tax |
You can make and sell a first product without paying for either tool. Canva’s US pricing page lists annual prices and notes that tax is extra, so check the current price before you upgrade. Pro also changes how you’re allowed to deliver some products (see the license rules below), so upgrading isn’t automatically the better move.
Product ideas that sell
Each idea pairs one product with one specific buyer. Narrow ideas are easier to describe, easier to find in search and harder for a generic AI listing to copy. For more AI-assisted formats, see our guide to AI business ideas for digital products you can build and sell.
- Instagram template sets for one trade. For example, 20 post templates for mobile dog groomers, sold as a Canva template link. The buyers are small business owners who already use Canva and want to post regularly without designing from scratch.
- Printable care logs. For example, a medication, appointment and contacts log for adults caring for an aging parent. The buyers are family caregivers who want paper forms they can share with siblings.
- Short workbooks. For example, a first-month workbook for new home daycare providers, with checklists and parent-facing forms. ChatGPT drafts the structure, and you add the real-world detail that makes it trustworthy.
- Classroom printables. For example, editable reading logs and substitute-plan templates. The buyers are teachers and homeschooling parents.
- Event signage sets. For example, a matching welcome sign, seating chart and menu for a DIY wedding, sold as a Canva link. The buyers are couples who want a polished look without hiring a designer.
- A mini-course. For example, “Canva basics for church volunteers”, with slides built in Canva and scripts you draft with ChatGPT and then rewrite. The buyers are volunteer coordinators.
One idea to skip is prompt packs, because Etsy began removing listings that sell AI prompts in 2024.
The Canva license rules most guides skip
Canva’s own guide to using Canva to create products for sale sets out what you can and can’t do:
- You can only sell original designs. You can’t sell Canva content on its own.
- If a template uses Pro content, you must sell it as a Canva template link only, not as a PDF or other file.
- You can’t sell clipart or stock assets made from Canva Free or Pro content for use outside Canva.
- You can’t print Canva content as it comes, such as a single stock image on a t-shirt.
- Ebooks may include unedited Pro content only up to a 480,000-pixel limit.
- For client work, you can transfer a design to one client only.
- If a print-on-demand service requires you to own the copyright, you can’t use Canva content there.
- You may sell AI images made in Canva, but Canva advises getting legal advice because copyright ownership is unclear.
In practice, sell template sets as Canva links. For PDF printables, build mostly from your own type, shapes and photos, and check the guide for your product type before you export. Any fonts, photos or AI art you bring in from elsewhere have their own licenses, so confirm that each one allows commercial use in products for sale. And don’t resell PLR packs or anyone else’s templates unless you have clear written rights.
AI disclosure and copyright
Ownership. OpenAI’s terms say you own your output, and Canva’s AI Product Terms say the same for its AI features. Both companies also ban passing AI content off as human-made. Canva adds that you must not remove the C2PA provenance metadata from AI images.
Disclosure on marketplaces. Since July 2024, Etsy has allowed AI items made from a seller’s own prompts, and it requires you to say so in the listing description. Amazon’s KDP content guidelines require you to disclose AI-generated content, even if you edited it heavily afterwards. Content that is only AI-assisted (you wrote it, and AI helped you brainstorm or polish) doesn’t need disclosing.
Copyright. In January 2025 the US Copyright Office concluded that prompts alone don’t give enough human control to count as authorship. Purely AI-generated material can’t be copyrighted, but human arrangement and changes can be. On March 2, 2026, the Supreme Court declined to hear Thaler v. Perlmutter, so the rule that copyright needs a human author still stands. If a design is pure AI output, you may have little recourse when someone copies it. Your own edits, selection and arrangement give you something to protect, and they’re also why a buyer picks your version.
Where to sell
| Platform | Fees we could confirm | Audience | Your control | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Etsy Etsy | $0.20 listing fee (renews every 4 months or on sale), 6.5% transaction fee, 3% + $0.25 US payment processing. Offsite Ads charge 15%, or 12% and mandatory once you pass $10K in 12 months | Large built-in search traffic | Low | Printables, template links |
| Gumroad Gumroad | 10% + $0.50 on direct sales, 30% through Discover. Collects and remits sales tax as merchant of record | Mostly the audience you bring | High | Ebooks, bundles |
| Amazon KDP | 35% royalty, or 70% minus delivery costs. From July 7, 2026, the 70% band on Amazon.com covers $2.99 to $12.99 | Kindle readers | Low | Short ebooks and workbooks |
| Teachable Teachable | Starter is $39/month ($29 billed annually) with a 7.5% fee. Builder is $89/month ($69 annually) with 0% on Teachable Payments. US card processing is 2.9% + 30¢ | The audience you bring | High | Mini-courses |
| Canva Creators | Royalties from a pool that grows with Canva’s subscription revenue. Canva doesn’t disclose the pool size | Canva’s own users | Low | Polished template designers |
Marketplace fees change from time to time, so check Etsy’s current fee page before you set your prices.
Canva Creators is still in beta. You apply with a portfolio and must be over 18, and sign-ups for Element Creators are on hold. Payouts arrive monthly once you reach US$10 (US$25 for wire transfers).
If you’d rather design for clients, Fiverr sellers keep 80% of each order. Upwork charges a freelancer fee of 0 to 15% per contract.
A $12 printable, worked through
These are our assumptions: a $12 price, a US buyer, no Offsite Ads, and sales tax ignored.
- Etsy: $0.20 + $0.78 (6.5%) + $0.61 (3% + $0.25) = $1.59 in fees, so you keep about $10.41.
- Gumroad, direct link: $1.20 + $0.50 = $1.70, so you keep about $10.30.
- Gumroad, via Discover: 30% is $3.60, so you keep about $8.40.
Now add your tools. Canva Pro at $144/year works out to $12 a month, and ChatGPT Plus is $20, for a total of $32 a month. At about $10.41 a sale, you’d need four Etsy sales every month just to cover them. That’s a good reason to stay on the free plans until sales come in.
Pricing tiers
A simple three-step ladder helps buyers choose:
- Good: one focused item, such as a single tracker or a small template set.
- Better: the full set plus a short how-to guide or video.
- Bundle: everything you make for that buyer, priced below the cost of buying each piece separately.
Start with one tier. Add the others once you know which questions buyers ask and what they wish had been included.
The not-so-passive part
“Make it once, sell it forever” is only half true. Expect ongoing work in these areas:
- Marketing. Marketplace search helps, but most sellers still share their work on Pinterest, through an email list or in short videos.
- Customer questions. People will ask how to open a Canva link, how to print at home, or why a page looks different on their screen.
- Updates. Dated designs, broken links and seasonal products all need a refresh.
- Copycats. Pure AI designs are easy to copy, which is one more reason to add your own judgment.
- Reviews. The FTC rule against fake reviews and testimonials, including AI-written ones, took effect in October 2024. Earn your reviews.
What has changed, and what to watch
- The Canva affiliate program (the Canvassador Program) is closed to new applications, so ignore guides that quote referral payouts.
- ChatGPT Instant Checkout, which launched with US Etsy sellers in September 2025, has ended. OpenAI now lets merchants use their own checkout.
- OpenAI announced in September 2026 that custom GPTs will move to “plugins”, so we wouldn’t build a paid product around a custom GPT right now.
- From July 7, 2026, KDP raised the top of its 70% royalty band on Amazon.com from $9.99 to $12.99.
- KDP limits each account to 3 new titles per day, and Amazon has said that number may change.
Taxes in plain terms
This isn’t tax advice. For your own situation, talk to a tax professional.
- All income is taxable, even if you never receive a form.
- Platforms send a Form 1099-K only once you pass both $20,000 and 200 transactions in a year.
- For client work, the 1099-NEC threshold is $2,000 for payments made after December 31, 2025.
- Self-employment tax of 15.3% applies once your net earnings reach $400.
- Hobby income goes on Schedule 1 (Form 1040), line 8. The IRS weighs several factors to decide whether you’re running a hobby or a business.
- Canva Creators asks for a W-9 (or W-8) and may withhold tax from royalties.
Keep receipts for your subscriptions, and ask a professional which costs you can deduct.
Red flags: the “AI passive income” pitch
The FTC has gone after this exact pitch more than once. Its 2024 Operation AI Comply included Ascend Ecom, which took at least $25 million from consumers with “AI-powered” storefront claims. Click Profit charged fees of $45,000 or more and cost consumers at least $14 million, and its operators were permanently banned from the industry in 2025. The FTC’s advice is simple: real opportunities don’t make you pay for training. Be wary of promises of fast cash for minimal work, and of any pressure to decide right away.
You don’t need a paid course to start. Free plans, Canva’s licensing guide and one small product will teach you more.
Who this isn’t for
- Anyone who needs reliable income next month. Sales usually start small and arrive unevenly.
- Anyone hoping for zero customer contact. Buyers will have questions.
- Anyone planning to mass-produce unedited AI output. Disclosure rules, upload limits and copycats all work against it.
- Teens under 18, for now. You can use ChatGPT and Canva from 13 (ChatGPT needs a parent’s permission until 18). Etsy requires sellers to be 18 or to sell through a parent’s account, and Canva Creators requires you to be over 18.
Ship a tiny version
This week, make the smallest product a stranger could pay for:
- Pick one buyer and one annoying task. For example, a caregiver tracking medications. Write it down in a single sentence.
- Draft with ChatGPT. Ask for a one-page outline, then cut it down and rewrite it using what you actually know.
- Design in Canva. Make one printable page or a set of five templates, using your own type, shapes and photos wherever you can.
- Test it like a buyer. Print it at home. If it’s a template link, open it from a second Canva account.
- Write the listing. Let ChatGPT draft the description, then edit it, and disclose any AI-generated parts where the platform requires it.
- List it and tell five people who fit. Use Etsy or a Gumroad direct link, price it modestly, and note every question you get. Those questions are your plan for version two.
Keep the first version small and easy to ship. Once real buyers tell you what they need, the next step is clear, whether that’s a better tier, a bundle or one of the other AI-assisted digital product ideas.
